The Beginning of Ride for the Roses June 3, 2007 The idea for Ride for the Roses Motorcycle Poker Run to benefit Cystic Fibrosis began soon after the diagnosis of a family friend's daughter (Tiffani) in 2006. I wanted to do something to support Tiffani, the DiNicola's and anyone living with CF. I called upon my love for motorcycles and my husband's love for playing cards, and put together a bike ride/poker run. The ride route included 5 locations throughout central Connecticut where riders collect a Poker hand. Once riders arrive back to Guilford, the rider with the best poker hand at the end of the run is announced and received their prize. Every dollar earned through the ride went directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, an organization that has made significant progress towards fighting this horrible disease. After months of planning, the overcast June morning arrived as we stood at the registration tables anxious for the turn out. Promptly at 10am the distant rumblings came from over 100 motorcycles, most carrying passengers, dedicating their afternoon to support my dream, and the future of those with Cystic Fibrosis. The first annual ride started in Guilford continuing on to Mug Shotz in Hamden, Old Glory in North Haven, Neighbors Bar & Grill, Old Glory in Middletown, Hitch n Post in Northford and back to Knights Of Columbus in Guilford. The route offered beautiful scenery, a great mix of stops at comfortable intervals, along with many happy riders and one happy poker winner. As always, we ended the event with a party with food, music, dancing, raffles and a bike show. The day was a success; raising over $4000, 100% of which was donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Thanks to all that came to ride, to all who volunteered, to all that donated raffle items, food, beverages, ad space, rider giveaways, venues, to all the businesses that posted signs and to those who passed on the word. I look forward to future rides and the year we can do a Ride for the Roses Victory Ride! |
